Virus and Spyware Removal Process

Assumptions:

I am assuming that the reader is using a Windows operating system, has administrator rights (is allowed to download and install programs), and knows how to access safe mode. The reader can assume that all recommended software is free for personal use unless specified otherwise.

Forword:

The difficulty of performing a thorough virus removal on a badly infected machine is often underestimated. It tends to require more than simply running a scan with your favourite antivirus program. I’ll attempt to lay out the steps for virus removal in the following steps, but before you begin keep in mind that it is a thorough and time consuming process. The thoroughness is necessitated by the nature of modern infections. If you miss one Trojan horse, your system will quickly arrive at the same level of infection once the malware re-invites all of its buddies.

Step 1: Determine whether or not you have a virus infection.

Typical virus behaviour may include the following:

* Frequent system error messages
* Slowness
* Hard drive activity (spinning/writing) for no apparent reason
* Lots of network activity, also for no apparent reason
* Difficulty with programs, especially antivirus programs. For example, you may have difficulty updating your antivirus definitions or the program may not start at all.
* Your browser randomly redirects to another web page without any action on your part.
* Your browser prevents you from accessing certain websites, especially to update your operating system or download an antivirus program.
* You begin seeing pop-up ads frequently.
* New and unfamiliar icons appear in your system tray, indicating new programs are running without your knowledge.
* You are denied permission when working on the computer even though you are an administrator.

Also keep in mind that a computer virus is similar to a roach in that there’s rarely just one. By the time you notice one virus, you probably have several.

Step 2: Determine the severity of the infection.

The severity of the infection should reflect to what degree your ability to access the computer normally is impeded. This will help you decide if you should attempt a virus removal at all or if you should simply back up your data and start from scratch with a format/reinstall. If you can do most everything you could normally do, but you know that you have a virus, the severity might rank as a one on a one to ten scale (ten meaning infected on a massive scale). Keep in mind that the worse the infection, the greater the damage caused by ripping the infection out during the removal process. If you cannot even access your computer in safe mode, you might consider the severity to be a ten. In this case, your computer has the equivalent of advanced-stage AIDS and should be formatted.

Step 3: Remove temp files.

Spyware often sits in the temp files and you can get rid of lots of malware simply by deleting temp files. More importantly however, you will save yourself tons of time when you scan for viruses because the scanners will not have to trudge through thousands of temporary internet files. When you run five or six scans, the amount of time you save adds up in a hurry. To accomplish this, I recommend running CCleaner. If you cannot install this program, you could also clean out the files by navigating to the directory C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files and cleaning out all of the unnecessary stuff. You might also want to run the CCleaner registry cleanup program. Sometimes this will get rid of viral registry keys. Another decent registry cleaner is Registry Mechanic, but only the trial version is free.

Step 4: Disable System Restore

Some viruses copy themselves into system restore files to avoid deletion. To remove these, it is necessary to disable system restore (which is largely worthless anyway in my opinion). Navigate to Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore. Disable system restore and make sure all prior restore points are deleted (they should be automatically).

Step 5: Based on the severity of the infection, plan your method of attack.

The important thing to keep in mind while planning your attack is that no one antivirus or antispyware program will find every infection. Organizations that are paid to remove viruses will use no less than nine or ten different antimalware programs and every single program will find something different. I’ve seen this personally hundreds of times.

Scenario 1: If you are able to access the internet while in safe mode.

If you are able to boot into Windows “safe mode” with networking and access the internet, you have the option of installing antivirus/antispyware software, updating the definitions, and scanning from within safe mode. If this is your case, you will choose the various antivirus/antispyware programs you intend to run and update the definitions to prepare for the next step. Select the anti-malware programs you will run from the list below (programs are listed in NO PARTICULAR ORDER). Install the ones that you have selected and go ahead and update all of them.

If you’d like to go the non-free route, I highly recommend Spy Sweeper Antivirus with Antispyware as well as AVG AntiSpyware (formerly Ewido).

Scenario 2: If you are unable to access the internet while in safe mode.

If you are unable to access the internet even while booted into safe mode, your best option is to use a boot disc such as Ultimate Boot CD, Hiren’s Boot CD (which includes a PE), or Bart’s PE. If your situation is severe enough to necessitate this option, you might want to run command-line antivirus scanners first, then boot into a PE and run cleaners and antispyware programs to follow up.

Step 6: Run Antimalware

Now begins the easiest and yet also the most time consuming part. I recommend selecting two or three of the antivirus programs to run first. If you are working in Windows safe mode, you should run one scanner at a time. If you are working in a PE or with a boot disc, you can run as many as you want simultaneously. Follow up with multiple (preferably all) of the antispyware programs next. Next try running one of the online antivirus scanners. Each scanner should find progressively fewer infections.

Step 7: HijackThis

HijackThis requires a step of its own. This utility is unlike any of the others because it does not automatically detect and remove infections. Instead, if provides you with a cross-sectional look at your system and is ideal for cleaning up after an infection as well as making sure there are no longer any traces left. Run this utility and post the output in a new Taz thread or in one of the many HijackThis support forums to get feedback on what (if anything) should be removed.

Step 7: Run fixes

After your system is clean, it can sometimes be helpful to download and run dial-a-fix to repair many of the things that viruses tend to screw up in Windows. You may also want to run winsock fix. In Windows XP SP2 and later (including Vista) you can simply type “netsh winsock reset” from the command line.

Hi my PC has been out of action for some months now.

Avast 4.8 is detecting C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\plvodftu.sys as infected by the Rootkit from my thread title.

I'm at a loss on how to clean things up. Firefox has been knocked out and IE only works slightly. Spam Emails are generated and sent out which Avast makes alerts for.

HijackThis is a free spyware detection tool from Trend Micro. It was orgiginally developed by Merijn Bellekom, a student in The Netherlands. Spyware removal software such as SpywareTerminator and Spybot: Search and Destroy detect most spyware. However, there are some spyware that are too stubborn and manual removal is the only way to go.

HijackThis has been developed specifically to detect browser hijacks, or software that takes over your web browser, alters your default home page and search engine and other malicious things. HijackThis is a spyware-remover and does not use signatures or target any specific programs or URL’s to detect and block. Rather, HijackThis looks for the tricks and methods used by spyware to infect your system and redirect your browser.

HijackThis generates a log which provides information on the condition of your computer. Analysis of this log requires experience and knowledge. However it is not so difficult and can be deciphered with a little online help.

There are also certain websites that provide online analysis for free. All you have to do is to copy and paste your log and you will get an ideas about the spyware that has infected your computer.

It seems mini versions of larger and pricier sets that still deliver the goods have become de rigeur amongst hardware manufacturers at MWC in 2010. Enter HTC's HD mini, a scaled down version of the beefy HTC HD2 with a 3.2-inch HVGA display for customers who want all the joys that device delivers without the need to actually use the beast itself — or find somewhere to store it. The housing design is typical HTC beautiful, but in a very unique departure, the fasteners used to hold the device together are exposed and become part of its style. In a similar vein, popping open the back of the phone reveals that the internal mount for the hardware is bright yellow — not that you'll ever see it, but let's be honest, just knowing it's there is kinda fun. Running WinMo 6.5.3 and Sense, the mini is headed for a European and Asian release in April with 7.2Mbps 900 / 2100 HSPA. No carrier deals or specs were mentioned — but with Mobile World Congress running all week, we may just hear something soon.

HTC has a press conference at Mobile World Congress tomorrow. Android.Modaco.com just got some interesting information…

First we have the HTC Desire (codename: Bravo)

It packs Android 2.1 with HTC Sense, a 1Ghz processor, a 3.7″ AMOLED WVGA resolution touchscreen with the optical trackpad into a package that is only 11.9mm thin. The spec sheet stated that it has “Friend Stream” which is probably part of HTC Sense, which is revamped for the Android 2.1 handsets.

Next up, the HTC Legend:

This looks to be the successor of the HTC Hero, which launched last year. The HTC Legend has a 3.2″ HVGA touchscreen, optical trackpad, Android 2.1 with HTC Sense, Friend Stream, and a aluminum construction.

And last we have the HTC Touch HD Mini:

No specs on this one, but it looks exactly like the Touch HD, expect it’s a lot smaller…and the addition of the “Mini” in it’s name. It’s probably running Windows Mobile 6.5 like the Touch HD.

We will only know if this is real at HTC’s conference tomorrow, but wow these handsets look amazing. Now…if one of you guys could just send a Desire my way….

I love the snow. I love skiing, snowball fights and building unintentionally disfigured snowmen. So it should be no surprise then that I make a point of watching at least some of the Winter Olympics on the box when it comes around every four years. Sporting events of that magnitude always carry a sense of grandeur, an aura of expectation for greatness, and a spirit of ceremony which is all stylishly packaged for viewers at home with the usual broadcasted overexposure to sponsors' logos and corny mascots. That's the real Winter Olympics. Sadly, much of what makes the event an entertainment spectacular has either been drastically marginalized or is missing entirely in Vancouver 2010: The Official Game of the Winter Olympics.

A license like this, as with the Summer Olympics, is brimming with possibilities. The Winter Olympics may not have the same level of exposure and fanfare as its sunny cousin, but the events are just as exciting (if not more so), and the setting is arguably far more interesting. Track and field? I'll take icy slopes any day. So the question is, why oh why did the developers insist on stripping the whole event down to its undies and leaving it out in the cold?

Ok, so we have a game of a big budget sporting event. First thing you'll want to get your teeth into is the fully fledged Winter Olympics mode, with all the bells and whistles and the glory of leading your chosen nation to glory. Right? Well, you can try, but you'll be sorely disappointed. There is an Olympics mode, but all it consists of is a list of the possible events of which you select the ones you want to take part in, an option to choose a participating nation (as my editor pointed out with dismay, there's no Jamaica!), and then off you go, trundling your way through the selected events until it all ends with hardly a whimper of ceremony. There is no character customization at all, no grand introduction, just a series of events with a few seconds of posing on the podium afterwards. Winning the Olympics should be a big deal, I would imagine, but here you are just sent off back to the main menu with barely a pat on the back. This lack of fanfare and ceremony is probably the games biggest shortfall, the one missed opportunity which really damages the overall experience.

The events themselves on the other hand can be rather entertaining, but are also inconsistent. Ranging from standard Alpine racing disciplines, including a variety of skiing and snowboarding events, to the lethal speed of the frozen tunnel of death which plays host to the luge, bobsleigh and skeleton events, there is at least a fair amount of variety here. The control systems for each event are mostly responsible for their inconsistency, with some obscure and obtuse methods of getting your little man (or woman) safely to the end of the race. Then again, some events are really straightforward, and it's when Vancouver 2010 keeps it simple that things start looking up. Fiddly rhythm-game sections feel out of place in events like the indoor speed skating, and the dual-analogue stick twirling needed to manoeuvre through the Ladies Aerials event is just silly. On the other hand, hurtling down the ice tunnel in a two-man bobsleigh or luge is manic, brutally fast, and easy to control.

That wild speed is one of the strongest aspects of Vancouver 2010's gameplay. Creating the illusion of speed in a game is not easy, and many racing games have tried and failed to make the player feel immersed in terminal velocity. It's actually difficult to pinpoint what it is about the downhill events here that make it feel so frighteningly fast sometimes. Maybe it's the motion blur (which serves a double purpose here because it also does well to mask the sometimes sub-standard environmental textures), or the way the gamepad vibrates violently with each bump, or the sound of packed snow crunching under your skis. Essentially it's all of those things together, and it works.

While the breakneck pace of some of the events will definitely put a smile on your face, it will probably be short lived, because there isn't much to bring you back to any specific event once you've won gold. That being said, winning gold can be pretty tricky, and will in many cases require some serious concentration at high speed and a bit of luck to get to the top of the winners podium. One tiny mistake, and your times will plummet, putting your character right at the bottom of the pack. This might spur some on to try harder and work on shaving seconds off the race times, but most will just be left feeling frustrated before too long.

While working on perfecting your race time, you will have plenty of time to study your character and the environments, and again the keyword here is inconsistency. The snowy peaks in the distance, with cold winter light filtering through the clouds, does well to convey the tranquil beauty of the icy landscape, but the character models are basic at best, and your immediate environment is a mixed bag too… nice from far, but far from nice. Sound is equally inconsistent, with realistic effects adding gravity to the illusion of speed over the snow and ice, but the music often seems really out of place. Nothing kills the tension and atmosphere in a serious race event of this nature like generic 'alternative rock' buzzing in your ears. Commentary is so rare, it's barely worth mentioning. So I won't bother.

By this point you may be ready to hand in your ski pass and get the hell off the slopes, but don't be too hasty. Look past the inconsistent and uninspiring Winter Olympics mode and you will find new reasons to smile, with the aptly titled Challenges mode, basically a series of increasingly challenging challenges across the different events. Challenges range from basic (but strangely thrilling) ski events where you need to stay as close to full speed as possible or consistently corner your bobsleigh to its limit, to more obscure events like snowboarding where the controls are reversed. While they aren't all equally entertaining, this is definitely the part of the game which will keep you coming back for more.

Multiplayer gamers can take to the slopes with friends and compete for a position on the leaderboards, playing via Xbox LIVE or System Link, and while this does add a bit of excitement to proceedings by adding the human element, the basic flaws still prevail, so don't expect Vancouver 2010 to take up much of your online game time.

I almost feel guilty for being so critical of this game, because in truth some of the events really did give me a quick thrill, especially the luge and skeleton races, but there just isn't enough here to warrant a purchase for most gamers. It's really sad that a license with such potential has been let down with a half-baked Olympic mode, which even goes as far as to exclude some of the official events from the Winter Olympics such as curling and ice hockey. There are far too few tracks to race on, you can't change any aspect of your character besides his/her nationality, and there are just too many missed opportunities to overlook. Yes, the speed will sometimes give you a funny feeling inside, and the challenges are good for a few laughs, so those with an affinity for winter sports may find joy here on the snowy peaks of Vancouver, but the rest of you are advised to leave this underachiever out on the ice.

Pros:

• Some events are nose-bleedingly fast
• Challenges are fun (and will net you some easy Gamerscore)

Cons:

• There is no sense of ceremony you expect from a worldwide event of this magnitude
• Controls, graphics and sound are all inconsistent
• Some aspects feels somewhat unfinished

Rating:

Dont know how many who will watch but me personally I will be a TV slave for the next 2 weeks, the channel who is showing 500hours of Olympic Games or nearly 31 hours a day they have 2 channels + one HD channel so I am just waiting for the Down hill skiing tomorrow and the Biathlon womens.

So what will you guys follow, I will follow as much as I can tbh been on skis since I was roughly 2-3 years old train skiing something like 5-10 hours a week.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Nodar Kumaritashvili, a men’s luger from the former Soviet republic of Georgia, died Friday when he crashed during training for the Winter Olympics. He was 21.

Medics reached Kumaritashvili within seconds of the crash, but they were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead a short while later after being airlifted to a trauma center in Whistler.

Kumaritashvili’s death came just hours before the start of the opening ceremonies for the Vancouver Olympics. International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge said the death “clearly casts a shadow over these Games.”

NEW YORK, N.Y. (February 15, 2010)-VERSUS, the fastest growing sports cable network in the country, will kick off the first week of March with additional NHL action Monday through Thursday night.  Five bonus games will be added to the week’s schedule that already included the Detroit Red Wings/Colorado Avalanche game on March 1 and the Philadelphia Flyers/Tampa Bay Lightning match-up on March 2.  Beginning on Tuesday, March 2, and continuing through the end of the regular season, VERSUS will also air HONDA Drive to the Playoffs; a 30-minute pre-game Hockey Central prior to each Tuesday night NHL telecast.  The network will also air full half-hour pre-game shows on March 1 and 3.

“We’ve reached a pivotal point in the NHL season; the trade deadline is set for March 3 and teams are not only jockeying for playoff positioning, but also fighting for their postseason lives,” said Marc Fein, Executive Vice President of Programming, Production and Business Operations for VERSUS.  ”This is a very exciting time of the year and we thought it was the perfect opportunity to super-serve NHL fans with bonus games and enhanced pre-game analysis.”

VERSUS’ first bonus game of the week, on March 2, will feature two of the top teams in the Eastern and Western Conferences with the San Jose Sharks hosting the New Jersey Devils at 10:30 p.m. ET.  The game will not air on VERSUS in the team markets due to local blackout restrictions.  On Wednesday, March 3, at 7 p.m. ET, VERSUS will televise the Washington Capitals and Buffalo Sabres game; local blackouts apply so home team markets will join the Philadelphia Flyers/Florida Panthers game at 7:30 p.m. ET.

VERSUS’ week of bonus game coverage concludes on Thursday, March 4, when the New York Rangers host the Pittsburgh Penguins at 7 p.m. ET.  The game will be blacked out in team markets and viewers in Pittsburgh and New York will have access to the Toronto Maple Leafs/Boston Bruins game.

The network’s regular season coverage continues on Monday, March 8, at 7 p.m. ET when the Dallas Stars visit the Washington Capitals and on Tuesday, March 9, at 7:30 p.m. ET with the Philadelphia Flyers hosting the New York Islanders.
